Designed by Carlinhos Brown, Museu du Ritmo was inaugurated in 2007 as an open space for culture and the arts. The space is part of the restoration initiatives for the Cidade Baixa (Lower City), area near the ports that was once Salvador’s commercial center. Occupying the complex of the old Mercado do Ouro (Gold Market), designated by IPHAN– Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (National Historic and Artistic Landmark Institute) as a historical landmark, the Museu du Ritmo houses many artistic projects. Today, artistic manifestations such as music, theater, fashion and fine arts, amongst other, are found within Museu du Ritmo, however, there are plans to transform it into the main cultural center in Salvador. This project, which is currently being developed, encompasses a series of services and cultural activities, as well as a school for digital inclusion that will service poor communities such as Pilar, located in the same geographical area.
These actions aim to give incentive to tourist influx into the area while contributing to historical and cultural recovery, in addition to economic revitalization through the creation of jobs and income.
