In November of 1996 Candyall Guetho Square was created in Candeal, yet another project by Carlinhos Brown. Candyall Guetho Square is a space for shows and events with capacity for 2,500 people. Its opening caused great impact in Salvador due to its distinct architecture and decoration filled with multiple elements and references, its stage centrally located within the plaza, and its unusual location.
It could not have been any other way. The Guetho (Ghetto), as it was lovingly nicknamed by its frequenters, became a hot-spot during the Bahian summer, a place where locals and tourists flocked to see the famous Sunday Timbalada rehearsals. To the sound of the chorus “vamos dar a volta no Guetho” (phrase with a double meaning: “lets take a walk in the ghetto” or “let’s turn over the ghetto”), audiences also enjoyed the frequent participation of special guests in the magical space. Renowned artists such as Ivete Sangalo, Jorge Benjor, Arnaldo Antunes, Daniela Mercury, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Marisa Monte, Dado Villa-Lobos, Beth Carvalho, Fafá de Belém, Durval Lélis, amongst many others performed in the space.
Currently the space is no longer being used for shows, but rather as one of Carlinhos Brown’s studios; a place where he receives friends and his closest partners for recordings, compositions and jam sessions, always gaining inspiration from energy and vibes of this enchanted space.
